Program Philosophy
The
teaching program at USC is focused on developing excellence as a
primary care provider which serves as a foundation for
community-based practice and/or subspecialty fellowship
training. Our graduates are extremely competitive in the job
market and for fellowship positions. Many hold prominent
leadership positions in their communities and in academic
medicine. Most teaching is provided in small groups,
supplemented by case-oriented discussions, didactic lectures and
individual reading. Residents are given progressive autonomy
under the supervision of the faculty. We strongly support
resident participation in our basic and clinical research
projects and in their own innovative projects.
The
pediatric residents are an essential and integral part of the
Department of Pediatrics. As such, residents actively
participate in policy making decisions for the Department,
particularly those that concern patient care and resident
education. There is a weekly faculty-housestaff meeting at noon
on Fridays to address programmatic issues.
We feel we offer the resident sufficient flexibility and time in
the clinical service schedule to focus on academic as well as
personal needs. We are very sensitive to the virtues of leisure
time with family and friends. Faculty members are always
available to discuss any personal or educational issues.
