Pediatric Residency Teaching Facilities
The Pediatric Residency Training
Program at Los Angeles County+University of
Southern California Medical Center is centered
at Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH) which
is one of the largest maternal-child teaching
units in the United States. All neonatal and
pediatric inpatient services are located within
WCH including a 100 bed normal nursery, 48 bed
NICU, 70 bed pediatric inpatient unit and 8 bed
PICU. In addition, the pediatric emergency room
is located just inside the entrance to WCH.
There are 35,000 pediatric emergency room visits
per year including acute emergencies, urgent
care and minor trauma. Additional experience
with major and minor trauma is provided within
the trauma unit in General Hospital.
The outpatient facility is adjacent to WCH and
accommodates 50,000 continuity and specialty
clinic visits per year. We have additional units
for our internationally acclaimed Center for the
Vulnerable Child Program which is the referral
unit for victims of abuse. Our unique
maternal-child HIV program is located in a
separate structure, the Health Research
Association Building, across the street from the
Medical Center. Another two story building
houses the extensive research program for the
Department.
WCH is the pediatric referral unit for Los
Angeles County's Northeast Healthcare Network.
The Department of Pediatrics provides primary
care, specialty care and continuing education in
the health centers providing our residents with
an opportunity for extensive community outreach.
The required adolescent medicine rotation is
supervised by the Division of Adolescent
Medicine at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and
provides added experience with community based
services such as Job Corps and free clinics.
Residents also rotate through the mobile asthma
van program which provides preventive care and
education at schools in the Los Angeles Unified
School District.
There is a library in WCH and additional
libraries in General Hospital and at the USC
School of Medicine. Computer access and a large
residency lounge offer additional references.
Index reference books are located adjacent all
patient care areas.
The curriculum is designed to take advantage of
these excellent resources with a sensitivity to
maximizing opportunities for learning and
minimizing travel time. |
