Overview

The vibrant downtown area of Los Angeles, located just three miles minutes away from the Keck School of Medicine and the LAC+USC Medical Center, is home to several diverse, ethnic and cultural communities. One can experience the cafes and restaurants of Chinatown or Little Tokyo, explore the streets of Little Armenia or India Town, or feel the energy of the Mexican marketplace at the city’s birthplace, Olvera Street.

Landmarks

Downtown Los Angeles is home to many historical, contemporary and political landmarks, such as the Central Library, Staples Center, and the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The civic center, a sub-region of the city that is home to such places as the Music Center and Federal Courthouse, has the distinction of containing the largest concentration of government employees in the U.S.

Shopping, Dining, & Nightlife

Downtown Los Angeles is home to the Fashion and Jewelry Districts, which make for great, affordable shopping destinations. Also, the diverse cultural areas of downtown provide an ideal setting for locating rare and authentic ethnic merchandise.

The nightlife in Los Angeles offers something for any age or any mood. The Music Center is home to numerous plays, musicals and related events, while hot spots like the rooftop bar at the Standard Hotel and Club Soho guarantee a full night of entertainment. For those who are simply looking for a pleasant dining experience, downtown boasts a cuisine that spans from the elegance of the Water Grill, known for its first-rate seafood, to the Latin-jazz inspired energy of Ciudad.

Housing

The ongoing renovation and innovation of downtown Los Angeles has resulted in a flood of residential development. Bunker Hill and the Wilshire Center (located near the heart of Downtown) offers a truly urban mix of retail, dining and entertainment, as well as plenty of residential opportunities

School Systems

The school systems that accommodate the downtown and surrounding areas are dedicated to school improvement and maintaining the welfare of the student as a top priority. There are many after-school, recreational programs offered, as well as magnet schools and opportunities for advanced learning.

Crime

There are always concerns about crime in big cities, and Los Angeles is no exception. However, reducing crime in Los Angeles is a major priority for city and statewide law enforcement agencies, and the statistics bear that out. The number of crimes in Los Angeles has decreased significantly in the last decade, dropping more than 25% since 1993.
