Beach Communities

Overview

Although the various beach communities are 15-25 miles from the campus, they are easily accessed by the local freeways. Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Malibu are situated to the northwest of the Keck School, while Manhattan, Redondo, and Hermosa Beaches lie southwest.

Landmarks

Aside from the beauty of the coastal landscape, the beach communities offer several attractions to rouse public interest. Among those attractions are the Manhattan Beach Studios, the first studio built from the ground up in California in 60 years, Malibu Creek State Park, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the annual Santa Monica Film Festival, and the famed Santa Monica Pier.

Shopping, Dining, & Nightlife

The beach communities all feature excellent choices for dining, shopping and nightlife, and provide an ideal setting for those who enjoy the beauty and serenity of the coast. The beach communities of the South Bay, (Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo) offer quaint, coastal boutique shopping, while Santa Monica’s famed Third Street Promenade, a major tourist attraction, offers a more trendy selection, including several restaurants, two theatres, and nightclubs.

Housing

Rental prices are usually higher in these beach communities, and traffic may prolong the duration of the commute, but many feel this inconvenience is worth the beauty and atmosphere of these areas.

School Systems

The school systems in the beach communities are very accommodating and are dedicated to improving the achievement of every student, while simultaneously closing achievement gaps. There are several after school programs offered, as well as opportunities for advanced learning, such as the GATE Program.
